How music therapy is helping patients recover at King’s

At King’s College Hospital, music is bringing comfort, connection, and joy to patients when they need it most, and we’re so proud to be funding it.
A patient and her family singing and playing music together

For patients facing long hospital stays and difficult treatments, including those with blood and bone marrow cancers, stroke and haematology conditions, and those in critical care, our new music therapy programme offers something incredibly special: a moment to breathe, to smile, and to feel more like themselves again.

“It’s a lovely thing to help people feel happy.” – Caroline, patient at King’s

Caroline has spent many months in hospital undergoing treatment and recovery. It hasn’t been easy, but music therapy has become a vital part of her journey.

It’s good to listen to music that I used to listen to when I was younger. It’s always nice to have positive interactions… it’s nice to shake the instruments along to the song.

Through music, Caroline has found comfort, connection, and joy, even on the hardest days.

“It’s a lovely thing for the Charity to do to help people feel happy,” she adds.

A moment of light in a difficult time

Music therapy brings warmth and connection, a chance to feel emotions, share a smile, and be part of something uplifting, during what can often be a lonely time for patients who are going through something tough.

Led by trained music therapists, sessions are tailored to each patient. Sometimes it’s a quiet one-to-one moment; sometimes it’s a small group playing and singing together. Every session is different, but each one brings the same thing: a moment of lightness and support during a difficult time.

It helps patients by:

  • Reducing anxiety and stress

  • Helping manage pain

  • Encouraging social connection

  • Supporting emotional expression

  • Lifting spirits and improving well-being

Made possible by kindness

This beautiful project wouldn’t exist without our generous supporters. We’re so grateful to our donors Ciaran HorohoeMarian Ryan, and Carmelita and Pat for their incredible kindness in helping make music therapy possible at King’s.

Because of you, patients like Caroline are finding hope and healing through music. Thank you.

Help bring the joy of music to more patients

We believe everyone deserves moments of joy and connection, especially when they’re in hospital. Music therapy is already making a difference at King’s, but with your help, we can reach even more people.

If you’d like to support this work, make a donation today, or get in touch with our team to learn how you can get involved.

Together, we’re helping patients feel more themselves, one song at a time.
