Thomas's story

Thomas Hill is going the distance to show his support for the Hospital Heroes that saved his life not just once... but twice.

At just 12 years old, Thomas Hill was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis and Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC), a rare condition that affects the size of the bile ducts. And ever since then, King's College Hospital has provided him with what Thomas describes as "world-class care".

"The liver experts at King’s looked after me throughout my teenage years, then again through my mid twenties when, in spite of excellent treatment, the PSC took a turn for the worse and I needed a liver transplant in 2012."

Thomas received the call for transplant in September 2012, just three months after being added to the transplant list. The surgery was successful and after a slow recovery the new liver worked well.

In 2018, King’s saved Thomas's life again, after detecting an incredibly aggressive lymphoma. After four months of intensive chemotherapy, Thomas was given received the all-clear in December that year.

As his way of saying thank you, on Sunday 30th August 2020 Thomas is undertaking an epic 15km sponsored walk along the coastline from Folkestone to Hythe, Kent, to raise money for our Hospital Heroes Appeal

"I want to support all the excellent charities and causes that continue to help me and help so many people with complex medical needs, get the best life they deserve. King’s College Hospital is one of them, and very close to my heart. The wonderful NHS staff and dedicated frontline workers need our support now more than ever before."

Thomas has already smashed his target of raising £500 for our Hospital Heroes Appeal, which is helping to provide additional care, support and wellbeing for the heroic NHS staff and vulnerable patients impacted by COVID-19.
