Sharon's story

King's College Hospital Charity is proud to fund the King's Volunteering Programme, which helps to provide additional support to patients, staff and visitors across our hospitals every day. Today we hear from Sharon Mundy, who volunteers once a week at King's College Hospital in Denmark Hill.

Sharon's role as a King's Volunteer can take her anywhere in the hospital, and her responsibilities vary every shift.

"I read to, speak with, and run errands for patients," says Sharon.

"I make sure patients are comfortable and participate in activities with them.  I enjoy talking to them and making them feel comfortable, and easing their worries. "

Over the past year, 377 King's volunteers have given over 21,938 hours of their time to help our hospitals as they contended with the extraordinary pressures of the pandemic. That's equivalent to 914 solid days!

From working within the staff wellbeing hubs to ensuring visitors entering the hospital maintained hygiene standards, volunteers like Sharon were there to relieve the pressure on frontline staff so that they in turn could continue to provide the very best care for patients.

Sharon says that volunteering suits her because after her shifts, she walks out feeling a huge sense of fufilment.

"I get genuine joy from seeing patients in good spirits and seeing that I’ve contributed to their positivity," says Sharon.

"Volunteering makes you feel incredibly fulfilled. I would definitely recommend volunteering."

Volunteers play a vital role in improving the experience of patients and relieving pressure on frontline staff. #TeamKings wouldn't be the same without volunteers like Sharon selflessly giving up their time.
