The heart of our strategy

Jessie, Kanayo, Maurice and Charles are connected to King's in different ways. Their incredible stories are featured in our strategy and illustrate how we as a charity are supporting the work of King's staff, and how we're determined to take it further.

Our three-year strategy aims to help King's keep care advancing and keep improving people's experience of our hospitals.

Nine-year-old Jessie, a liver transplant recipient, and his guardian, Lucy, have been champions for this cause, drawing attention to details that make a game-changing difference to how people feel when they are in hospital.

“They thought of everything," Lucy said. " Instead of Jessie walking the ten minutes to the surgical room, they encouraged him to drive there in the unit’s special electric car and he loved it. He was the first one to use it."

The funds we raise as a charity are helping to support both the pioneering, world-leading treatment Jessie received in the surgical room as well as the car that took him there and other enhancements that make our hospitals feel more comfortable and less overwhelming.

“When Jessie had to spend some time in the Intensive Care Unit, I was able to sleep in a proper bed in a room with its own little kitchen and bathroom. This made such a difference because it gave me time to rest, contact the family and have a brief break from the relentless stresses of the situation."

Consultant Nephrologist Alexandra Rankin and Maurice Marshall

Maurice Marshall is one of the many King's patients who has benefited from medical research and innovation. In 2021, he spent 22 days on a ventilator in an induced coma. COVID-19 had attacked his organs and his kidneys were failing.

The King's Renal Team treated Maurice with peritoneal dialysis, which is an alternative treatment to the traditional dialysis technique.

This treatment took over the function of his kidneys, allowing Maurice’s body to use the energy it required to concentrate on fighting the virus.

Currently, there are 684 studies running across King's College Hospital NHS Trust - of which 36 relate to COVID-19.

Research and innovation is vital to providing high quality patient care at King's. This is why our strategy aims to support the development of new research and better treatments for the community, so patients like Maurice, can achieve the best possible outcomes.

Kanayo Dike-Oduah and her mother, Hilda

To make the biggest impact, we need to keep building income and support for our cause. Generous donations from the King's community and charitable grants enable us to make a huge different to the thousands of lives that make up the King's community.

Kanayo Dike-Oduah and her mother, Hilda, fundraised for King's College Hospital Charity by taking on the Great Hospital Hike. The Hike was a huge sucess with over 400 hikers raising an incredible £158,000 for King's.

Our wonderful supporters enable us to enhance King's hospital services over and above what NHS funding can provide.

The new Roof Garden design plans

Some of the most unwell patients spend weeks or even months on King's critical care unit while they recover from life-threatening conditions.

Going outside can completely change how critically ill patients feel, by giving them something different and positive to focus on.

As part of our strategy, we aim to continue to support projects that push boundaries and transform clinical services, helping to deliver a better experience and more positive outcomes for patients and their loved ones.

This is why we are incredibly proud to support the development of a roof top garden for critical care patients. Even patients on life support will be able to spend time there, thanks to specially-designed critical care beds, monitoring systems and equipment.

In different, powerful ways, Jessie, Maurice, Kanayo and Charles have benefited from King's care and helped to advance it.
