Malcolm: building a healing outdoor space in King’s rooftops

As part of the team behind King’s world-class Critical Care Unit, Malcolm is leading the construction of the pioneering new Outdoor Critical Care Unit – a space designed to support recovery and wellbeing in the heart of the hospital

Malcolm has been closely involved in creating the new world-class Critical Care Unit (CCU) at King’s. As part of the project, he is now leading the construction of the new outdoor CCU, a beautiful new space fully funded by the Charity.

The outdoor Unit will give critically ill patients the chance to experience the outdoors during their recovery – breathing fresh air, being in nature, or simply seeing the sky again after long stays in hospital.

It’s going to be an extremely proud moment for us all to see it open and functional

“The outdoor Unit is going to provide an external environment for patients currently recovering in CCU, giving them the opportunity to come and experience the outside world during their recovery period,” says Malcolm.

The Unit has been carefully designed to support patients’ medical needs, with dedicated spaces equipped with all the same services as a CCU bed bay – from ventilators to medical gases, data and power.

“It’s going to be an extremely proud moment for us all to see it open and functional,” he says.

Give King’s space to save more lives this winter

Our world-first Outdoor Critical Care Unit will open new paths to recovery through fresh air and nature. With your help, King’s can keep creating spaces where life, hope, and healing grow together.
