The Walker family was first introduced to King's in January 2020 when a blood test identified a problem with 3-week-old Amelie's liver.
“Over the next few days, the experts at King's diagnosed her as having acute liver failure which would need a liver transplant for her to survive," says Amelie's dad, Daniel.
Amelie was placed on the transplant waiting list, and admitted to the Rays of Sunshine Ward at King's College Hospital while the Walkers anxiously awaited news.
Just 11 days later, a suitable liver was found and Amelie underwent an 8 hour transplant surgery, led by Consultant Transplant Surgeon at King's, Hector Vilca-Melendez. The transplant was a success, and the clinical team at King's began helping Amelie recover from surgery.
"Aside from being a brilliant surgeon, Hector has been incredibly honest, kind and friendly throughout. We can't really thank him enough," says Daniel.
After a total of 57 days in hospital, Amelie was discharged from King's and finally allowed to go home.
The Walkers are so grateful for the care Amelie received, they went the extra mile for King's at the Great Hospital Hike.
"By raising money for King's, we would like to make a small contribution to ensuring that children from across the UK, Europe and further afield can benefit from world-leading liver care at King's," says Daniel.
The family has already fundraised over £5,000 and are encouraging their friends and family to support 'Team Amelie'.
