“In April, I developed COVID-19 and was taken to hospital by ambulance," Shiroma says.
"My oxygen levels were very low, and my family was told I had a 50% chance of making a recovery. I needed a ventilator to help me breathe, and I don’t recall much about my time in intensive care.
"I do remember how kind and gentle the nurses were. Nothing was too much for them, and when I started to recover from the virus, they made sure I kept in touch with my family via FaceTime. When they told me I had spent 44 days fighting COVID-19, I was sure they’d made a mistake. I couldn’t believe I’d been ill for so long.
“Unfortunately I then developed an infection, and spent around seven weeks back in the ICU.

Inspired by the round-the-clock care from the staff at the PRUH, Shiroma has volunteered to be a part of post COVID-19 research projects at King's College Hospital. But her displays of gratitude don't stop there. Shiroma has also signed up to go the distance and fundraise for King's through our Kilometres for King's challenge.
"I would like to challenge myself to walk 105km for the 105 days stay in hospital due to COVID-19 before my 1st anniversary of hospitalisation," says Shiroma.
"For the NHS Heroes who worked tirelessly, putting themselves and their families at risk during the pandemic, and for the research projects that help future treatments.
