Niamh's story

Niamh O'Neill is going the distance for King's College Hospital Charity at the 2023 London Landmarks Half Marathon.

Run the LLHM

Niamh is a Charge Nurse and Junior Sister on King's College Hospital's Neurosurgery Ward. In 2020, she was redeployed to King's Critical Care unit to help care for COVID-19 patients.

During the early days of the pandemic, months went by without her seeing her family in Ireland and Niamh worried about them constantly. She turned to running as a way to cope with stress.

"I had to hide tears and pull myself together so I could take care of other people's families," remembers Niamh.

"I used to always see on the King's College Hospital Charity social media pictures of people walking and running for different events and looking so happy in the pictures.

"When I saw the advertisement for the London Landmarks Half Marathon, I chose King's College Hospital Charity to fundraise for so that I could give back to the incredible team who continually support me, my colleagues and our patients on a daily basis."
Niamh was redeployed during the pandemic

Much to the delight of her colleagues, Niamh organised a bake sale at King's Kinnier Wilson Ward in an attempt to boost her fundraiser donations.

Niamh's fundraiser was steadily approaching its £350 target when suddenly, she received an email notification saying that someone had donated an incredible £10,000.

They left the message, "we are indebted to King's, the staff of the Kinnier Wilson Ward and in particular to our favourite nurse!"

Niamh's bake sale was a massive hit with her colleagues

Niamh discovered the donation was from the family of a patient Niamh and her colleagues had cared for in the past.

"King's College Hospital Charity does remarkable work to improve services in the hospital including refurbishments, awarding grants for staff research, supporting the King's Volunteer service and funding day-to-day improvements across the hospitals.

"I am so grateful and appreciative to my entire Neurosurgery team for all of their hard work and dedication daily delivering high-quality patient-centred care."
