Lucy and Jack's story

Lucy and Jack have gone the distance for King's College Hospital Charity by climbing Kilimanjaro. They're determined to show their gratitude towards the Critical Care Unit that saved Somaa's life.

In August 2021, Somaa was rushed to King's College Hospital in a critical condition. She was in heart failure and had suffered a cardiac arrest.

"I took my sister-in-law, Somaa, to King’s A&E completely unaware of how poorly she was," says Lucy.

"Within hours she was in a coma needing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation life support."

Somaa was so poorly she was transferred to Harefield Hospital for further care, just five days after being admitted for a potential heart transplant.

"King's Critical Care Unit B hands down saved her life," says Lucy.

"There are no words to express the profound gratitude we feel towards King’s College Hospital and Harefield Hospital."

After thirty-two days in Critical Care and a further twenty-two days on a Ward, Somaa was allowed to continue her recovery back at home with her one-year-old daughter. Inspired by King's and Harefield's extraordinary commitment to their family, Lucy and Jack decided to clock up their kilometres and fundraise for both hospital charities.

On the 12th of February, Lucy and Jack climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest freestanding mountain in the world.

"We are humbled to take on this challenge to raise money for King’s College Critical Care and Harefield Hospital," says Lucy.

"My fundraising goal is £5,000 and I would like to spilt however much I raise between the two hospitals.

"Without King's and Harefield hospital, my one year old niece would not have her mummy at home with her today.""
