London Landmarks 2023 - Jane and Harry's Story

In June this year, just before his 11th birthday, Harry was hit by a car. Airlifted to King’s College Hospital, he spent eight weeks there receiving critical treatment. To say thank you to the skilled doctors and nurses who saved his life, his grandmother Jane is taking on the 2023 London Landmarks Half Marathon and raising money for King’s College Hospital Charity.

BRAVE HARRY ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY!

In June this year, young Harry was hit by a car. Badly hurt, he was taken by air ambulance to the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at King’s for lifesaving treatment.

Although he was intubated for just a short while, Harry took a very long time to come round, speak or be able to respond. For three long weeks, the family had to face the prospect that he might have suffered irreparable brain damage.

Thankfully, Harry slowly started to respond to the people around him and the dedicated team at King’s was able to begin working towards getting him home. Harry spent eight weeks in hospital, moving out of the PICU to the children’s ward when he was strong enough.

HARRY AND HIS MUM

At first Harry was unable to walk far and used a wheelchair to move around the hospital, but he worked incredibly hard to get back on his feet. Before long, he was able to leave the hospital for short periods to visit his dad who was staying nearby in family accommodation. Having been through so much, Harry was sad to miss his Year 6 leavers’ celebrations, so the physiotherapists helped arrange a visit to his primary school so that he could say goodbye to his friends.

Today, Harry is doing well and is back in school. His grandmother Jane, a nurse, wanted to do something to say thank you for the care and treatment he received. So, in honour of turning sixty next year, she has decided to run twelve half marathons in twelve months!
