Crossing the Kilometres for King's finish line

As the month of August drew to close, so did our Kilometres for King's challenge. And just like every great journey, it all began with a single step.

Crossing the virtual finish line together on 31 August 2020, we could not be more thankful to all those who joined the Kilometres for King's challenge and ran, walked, cycled, swam, skipped, jumped and climbed to support our Hospital Heroes.

By going the distance together, we have raised a grand total of over £25,000 to help NHS staff, patients, and families impacted by COVID-19.

No set rules or targets meant all participants set their own pace and their own goals.

Nicola's goal was to walk a mile for every day her brother, Christopher, spent at the King's College Hospital recovering from a liver transplant.

"98 miles represents 49 days and 49 nights", Nicola explained.

"We arrived at King's one very wet and rainy afternoon, nervous and excited about a new liver.  Little did we know what the next 7 weeks would hold.

"The liver didn't work as well as it should so Christopher was relisted 5 days later.  The transplant team worked miracles to find another suitable liver two days later. Then the hard work began from chest infections, flu, wound infections. He had the lot!

"But not once did the staff make Christopher, or us, feel like a burden. Nothing was ever too much for them."

"I'm a theatre nurse so understand the pressures all NHS staff are facing in these times", Nicola added.

Tom, Jamie and Sam took on a virtual Three Peaks Challenge after Tom's Mum was cared for at King's for 15 weeks while she recovered from COVID-19

At the end of the challege, collectively we travelled 4,492km. That's the distance from London to Egypt!

A huge thank you to all those who took part in the Kilometres for King's challenge. We are so proud of your tremendous efforts, and applaud you all.
