Asmita's story

King's College Hospital Charity is proud to fund the King's Volunteering Programme, which helps to provide additional support to patients, staff and visitors across our hospitals every day. Today we hear from Asmita, who volunteers at King's College Hospital in Denmark Hill.

Asmita's role as a patient befriender at King's can take her anywhere in the hospital, and her responsibilities vary every shift.

"My role mainly consists of supporting patient recovery by talking to and helping out patients on the wards," Asmita says.

"I make them refreshments, complete a puzzle or activity with them, and just have a general chat. I also help out at mealtimes by delivering their meals and run small errands such as buying newspapers.

"I expected each of my shifts to be similar and get a little repetitive after some time, however, I was extremely wrong!"

Asmita says that volunteering suits her because she wants to pursue a career in medicine.

"Being a volunteer has allowed me to confirm my passion for a healthcare career but also transformed the way I view clinical practice by receiving a first-hand insight," she says.

"I’ve also really relished in being able to work with such incredible healthcare professionals and being part of an amazing organisation."

Over the past year, 377 King's volunteers have given over 21,938 hours of their time to help our hospitals as they contended with the extraordinary pressures of the pandemic. That's equivalent to 914 solid days!

Asmita recognises the impact volunteers contribute to patient care, and how patient befrienders can help to cheer up patients who feel vulnerable or isolated on the ward.

"I’ve formed some incredible friendships that I shall remember forever," says Asmita.

"Without a doubt, volunteering has certainly been one of the best choices I’ve made

"It is extremely rewarding and an enjoyable part of my week and one that I always look forward to!"

Volunteers play a vital role in improving the experience of patients and relieving pressure on frontline staff. #TeamKings wouldn't be the same without volunteers like Asmita selflessly giving up their time.
