Critical: Between Life and Death is now streaming on Netflix, showcasing the work of the incredible teams at London’s Major Trauma Centres, including King’s College Hospital.

King’s College Hospital is one of four major trauma centres in London, providing critical care to some of the most severely injured patients. From a 24/7 helipad for emergency arrivals to a state-of-the-art Critical Care Unit, King’s plays a vital role in this life-saving network. This docuseries highlights the crucial work of the people behind it.

As a charity dedicated to life-changing care that goes above and beyond what the NHS provides, we’re proud to support the work of the King’s Trauma Team.

Slashing journey time for critically ill patients

The King’s College Hospital helipad, built with support from Charity funding, plays a vital role in delivering faster emergency care for critically ill patients around the clock. This year, we marked the 2,000th patient landing. The helipad operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

A birds-eye view of the helipad on a bright day with blue skies. There is a large yellow circle with a red cross in the middle to indicate where the landing strip is located for air ambulances. The London skyline is visible in the background.

World-class Critical Care

King’s world-class Critical Care Centre is at the heart of a service dedicated to improving outcomes for some of the most unwell patients. The centre has been thoughtfully designed to feel less clinical, with nature-themed artwork throughout and beds positioned next to floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the trees in Ruskin Park—supporting the mind as well as the body.

The unit features state-of-the-art technology, including a 360° rotating bed that allows patients to look around and choose what they see. Each bed is also surrounded by smart glass panels that can be turned clear, cloudy, or opaque, giving patients control over their privacy and view.

Providing psychological support

Beyond the wards, we work hard to provide additional support for critical care patients and their families, including funding services that offer long-term psychological support.

Bringing comfort to patients

Waking up on a trauma ward can be terrifying. You might not know where you are or how you got there. People come and go, and medical equipment hums and beeps around you.

Each year, King’s treats thousands of patients from across London and the South East with serious traumatic injuries—many facing long, challenging recoveries and in need of a supportive space to heal.

Thanks to our supporters, we funded a brand-new Day Room on the Katherine Monk Ward. With soothing lighting, a homely atmosphere, and views of nature, it's a place where patients can just decompress and escape the clinical environment of the ward.

The cosy Day Room gives families the space to relax together
