With the remarkable support of our community, we were able to contribute £50,000 towards the refurbishment of the Teenager and Young Adults Unit on the Murray Falconer Ward at King’s. The updated space has been designed to be warm, calm, and uplifting, providing young people with a supportive environment during some of the most challenging moments of their lives.
A space that feels more like home
Hospital stays can be overwhelming, especially for teenagers and young adults navigating complex health challenges. That’s why this new space has been carefully designed to feel less clinical and more like a place to relax, recharge and feel safe.
Each young person now has their own private room with a TV, giving them space to rest and enjoy quiet time with their loved ones. Just down the corridor, a new ‘snug’ area offers a cosy retreat filled with games, PlayStations, books, and art– somewhere to unwind, connect with others, and simply be themselves for a while.
Soothing artwork on the walls and thoughtful touches throughout help turn the ward into a brighter, more comforting place to be.
Designed with young people in mind
Every year, the amazing neurosurgery team at King’s cares for nearly 200 patients aged 17 to 24. These young people are treated for a range of complex neurological conditions, but until now, there was no space designed specifically for them.
Instead, they often had to share bays with much older patients, in settings that didn’t meet their emotional or social needs.
This project set out to change that, and thanks to the commitment of staff and the support of generous donors like you, it did.
What we helped make possible
With your support, we funded the new snug area. That included new flooring, lighting, comfortable seating and stunning murals painted by hand.
We also helped provide gaming carts, art trolleys, craft supplies, books, and board games — all of which bring colour, creativity and moments of joy to young people spending time on the ward.
Built with love, shaped by experience
What makes this space so special is that it was shaped by the people who matter most: the patients themselves. Their feedback was at the heart of every decision, from how the space looks to how it feels.
Now, teenagers and young adults have somewhere that meets their needs, not just medically, but emotionally and socially too. A space that helps them cope, rest, recover, and stay connected to the people they love.
Families also feel the difference, with the freedom to visit more easily and spend more meaningful time together in a less stressful environment.
One member of staff summed it up beautifully:
“We now have a fully equipped, purpose-built area enabling us to care for Teenagers and Young Adults, ensuring they are nursed holistically, and their individual needs and those of their carers and loved ones are met during what can be the most challenging or scariest time of their lives.”
A brighter future, together
This new unit has already made a huge difference, not just for the young people receiving care, but for the brilliant teams who support them every day. Staff say it’s lifted morale and shown what’s possible when people come together with a shared goal: making hospital life better for those who need it most.
And looking ahead, it’s helping reduce delays and giving young people quicker access to the specialist care they need.
We’re incredibly proud to have played a part in this transformation, and we couldn’t have done it without you.
Thank you for helping us create a space where young people feel seen, supported, and surrounded by care.
