Below we’ve addressed some of the common questions we get asked about being a fundraising volunteer. You can also find lots of useful information in our What to Expect guide.

Where will I be volunteering?

We carry out our fundraising work in various locations, mostly around London. We will advertise the location of each opportunity so you can sign up for the ones that suit you.

How much time will I need to give?  

The fantastic thing about our volunteer programme is that all our opportunities are completely flexible: we will let you know when we have opportunities coming up and you can sign up based on your availability.

There aren’t any opportunities on the website that are suitable for me – will this always be the case?

Our opportunities vary throughout the year depending on the fundraising activities taking place. They fall into four main categories:

Event Support
This is all to do with helping our community fundraising events run smoothly and supporting our fundraisers at challenge events. Responsibilities can include:

  • Meeting, greeting and directing guests
  • Helping set up at events
  • Cheering on our team at challenge events
  • Handing out leaflets, refreshments and goodie bags

Community Fundraising Support
This involves raising awareness of fundraising in the local community and helping us to reach out to more people. Responsibilities can include:

  • Distributing posters and collection tins
  • Coordinating the distribution of fundraising materials in hospitals
  • Representing us at events
  • Attending cheque presentations

Photography Support
We often need photographers to help us capture the moment at various events throughout the year. If you have access to a camera and the appropriate software, we’d really appreciate your help with this.

Office Support
This can involve helping in our busy fundraising office, with tasks such as:

  • Basic office administration
  • Packing materials for mailings
  • Helping to write our newsletters and publications
  • Researching new projects
  • Updating our database

If any of these areas interest you, but there are no specific opportunities listed on thewebsite that take your fancy, please sign up and we will let you know when new opportunities come available.

Can I claim expenses?

We will reimburse travel expenses up to the cost of travel for London Zones 1- 6. We will also reimburse reasonable lunch expenses when you volunteer for over six hours.

Will you interview me?

If there is an opportunity that requires specific skills or training, we may also ask you to come in for an informal interview to make sure the role is suitable for you.

What skills and experience do I need? 

Most of our opportunities simply require enthusiasm and commitment, however from time to time we do need help with tasks that require specific skills or training, like photography or design tasks. We will always make any requirements clear when we advertise the opportunities and talk you through the role in detail before you start.

How can I prove that I am a volunteer if someone asks? 

During any public-facing task we will provide you with a name badge and t-shirt so you can be easily identified with our team. We are also happy to provide references and proof of hours up to 12 months after you volunteer with us.

I want to get experience in a medical environment – can you help? 

As we are the fundraising team for King’s College Hospital, we handle volunteering opportunities that are to do with fundraising, rather than roles within the hospital themselves. If you would like to volunteer within a hospital environment, you need to contact the hospital directly. Their contact details are as follows:

Are your opportunities suitable for back-to-work schemes?

Our volunteer programme is offered on a flexible, ad-hoc basis, so it isn’t suitable for people looking for structured, week-by-week work experience.

What if I have a criminal record?

Having a criminal record will not automatically exclude you from volunteering with us; we simply ask that you make us aware of this during your application. We will review each application on a case-by-case basis.

Can you help with my visa application?

Due to the ad-hoc basis of our volunteer programme, we are unable to offer assistance with visa applications or cover expenses beyond those outlined above.
